3 Tips for Making Healthier Food Choices at Home

family meal time - healthier choices at home

You’ve probably learned by now that reading books and articles is insightful, but what is more important are the action steps – HOW are you going to make these changes in your home? This post is meant to walk you through your own challenges and set up clear, actionable steps to finally get to your destination: healthier food choices in your home.

As a nutritionist, mom of 2 and married to an athlete, we have a solid foundation of nutrition in our household – not just going by the books, but because we know how good nutrition makes us feel, think, sleep, perform and that we are in complete control of giving our body everything it needs in order to thrive.

Keep It Simple.

If I can guide you to a healthier path for you and your family, my main point of direction is for you to keep it simple. Our culture has overcomplicated this “eating well” persona. The only hard part is breaking bad habits and that involves getting slightly uncomfortable and being willing to make a change for you and your family. Everything is hard in the beginning. The decision is yours.

3 Tips When Starting Out:

We don’t believe in excuses, but we do value challenges. And often challenges aren’t solved because of the lack of clarity; or the “want” is not deep enough to make a change. Here are 3 tips when starting out:

1 Identify both personal & family challenges that cause poor eating habits. For example, is it lack of time or motivation? Boredom of food? Looking for fast, convenient options? Too busy? Don’t know how or what to cook?

2 What you buy is what you’ll eat. Identify this core challenge. Why do you buy what you do? If it’s because your child likes it then your thinking is backwards. You cannot expect to change when you are catering to the environment. You need to create the environment you desire.

3 Accept that change is hard in the beginning. If you want to make a change, you have to push past the hard part. Look for alternatives or swaps instead of complete removal. When depriving yourself or creating extremities, especially when dealing with diet, this poses another layer of challenges and can lead to a poor outlook on food and its true role: nourishment.

The best part about making changes with your family is that you will support, encourage and work together! Your family is your team – lead, guide, and help one another. Decide on your goals and why you want this for your family.
